Two third of the film was shot on location in Bruges, Belgium. Everything else was shot in a studio in London. For the on location filming in Bruges the cast and crew enjoyed the full support of the town of Bruges - they were free to build up set anywhere. The film was shot between the second half of January 2007 and 23 March 2007. The town of Bruges left the Christmas decoration from Christmas 2006 up especially for the filmset.

 

Over a hundred crew members stayed in hostels in Bruges, the producer, director and majority of the cast stayed in the small luxury hotel De Tuilerieën. Should you ever visit Bruges (and you should!), check out their hall of fame - Colin Farrell and Ralph Fiennes are on the wall there! Brendan Gleeson stayed in a different hotel because he preferred a room with a private kitchen and that room had already been given to Colin Farrell (DAMN I'm good at inside info).

 

From what I heard (because all I saw was Colin Farrell so the other stuff had to be pointed out to me afterwards by others) Ralph Fiennes didn't spend as much time in Bruges as the rest. Colin and Brendan were spotted in Irish pub "Celtic Ireland" several times, and also in the Irish pub below the Chinese restaurant. If I heard it right they enjoyed doing karaoke. If this accusation is incorrect and needs setting straight Colin Farrell can email me anytime.

 

Not everything was filmed in the streets of Bruges - there was also a studio outside the city's centre where scenes were shot on a set replica of the city's intended locations. The filming in London for as far as I know also took place in a studio.
