The four main men
The director and three leading actors of "In Bruges" - in short. We are just going to pretend that these men need any sort of introduction.
writer/director: Martin McDonagh
![]() You've seen The Pillowman, you've seen Six Shooter and now you can go see In Bruges. Also I bet you've never seen that picture of when he was younger. Yeah, I know. And he's saying hanging out with Colin Farrell and Ralph Fiennes stole his thunder. Impossible.
He's won a nice set of awards for his writing and directing, from the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play (The Pillowman) to an Academy Award for best short film (Six Shooter).
McDonagh (born 26 March 1970) said to have gotten the inspiration for In Bruges when he was in Bruges several years ago. He's stated that in a way, Ken and Ray represent the two sides of his brain there; culturally interested and... less culturally interested. I'm not gonna speak for him there, but you'll find it back in plenty of his interviews. Martin expressed the wish to make a film before, and this is his first feature film. Well done! Leading Man 1: Colin Farrell
With all the things that the press have eagerly written about his personal life, you'd think this man would be the one of the four that needs the least introduction. I disagree - I think that it's only now that people see In Bruges that they actually see what "us" fans have seen all along. He's fucking awesome.
Colin James Farrell was born in Ireland in 1976. In Ireland his career as an actor took off in 1998 when he appeared on the tv show Ballykissangel, but his US break was in 2000 in Joel Schumacher's Tigerland. Since then, you've seen him in Phonebooth, Intermission and most notoriously in Oliver Stone's Alexander which was murdered before birth by cynical critics and people who simply weren't that interested in Alexander the Great. I am of the opinion to this day that Alexander was fantastic - I got the chance to tell Colin this when I met him in Bruges and I'm very proud of that.
And now you can see him In Bruges, playing hitman-with-a-conscience Ray. The critics are raving about his performance and it was about time. Initially Colin tried to persuade Martin McDonagh into finding an actor for Ray with 'less baggage' but Martin managed to convince Colin eventually that he had to be Ray.
leading man 2: brendan gleeson
You've seen him in Troy, you've seen him in Harry Potter and now you can see him In Bruges (that never gets old).
Irish actor Brendan Gleeson (born 29 March 1955) is best known for his role as Mad Eye Moody in the Harry Potter films, but he's done an awful lot more than that. To name a few: Gangs of New York, Braveheart, Kingdom of Heaven. And Six Shooter. Duh.
He started acting at 34 and should be in about half of all the films you've seen in your entire life. That's how good he is.
He plays hitman-with-a-conscience-and-an-apetite-for-culture Ken in In Bruges, also getting much praise from the critics for his performance and also for the chemistry with co-star Colin Farrell. No, not that kind of chemistry you perv.
leading man 3: Ralph fiennes
![]() You've seen him in Schindler's List, you've seen him in The English Patient and now you can see him In Bruges. English actor Ralph Fiennes (22 December 1962) - pronounced as 'Rafe Fines' (get used to it) - has such a long list of awards won and award nominations that I can't even start because then I'll get all determined to finish and find myself out of webspace.
Fiennes makes interesting choices in films and characters, varying from his deeply fascinating character in Spider to the most honest and unhaunted politician you've ever seen in Maid in Manhattan opposite the lovely Jennifer Lopez. He is also Lord Voldemort in the last couple of Harry Potter films.
Also a respected stage actor, the reviews of his films rarely encounter any sort of tone of disappointment, so it is no surprise that the critics love his portrayal of Harry - the phone smashing crime boss (he can come smash my phone anytime).
